Sgt. D’Alessandro is a leader in many ways. After serving overseas with the United States Marine Corps, D’Alessandro realized that returning home was a larger challenge than he thought. While overcoming many of his own obstacles, Brett was learning just how hard it was for his fellow veterans to get the care and services they needed to return to their civilian lives. Brett took on a huge role in creating Backpacks For Life, a nonprofit organization, that serves the homeless/low income and in need veteran communities. D’Alessandro put his best foot forward while enduring his own uphill battle, to take a step back and realize the challenges that other veterans faced and created an organization to support them. D’Alessandro is never afraid to take on assisting a veteran in need and never turns his back when asked for help. He is a true leader to his fellow veterans and a guiding mentor to many.
Brett’s personal mission is to give veterans the tools and resources they need to get back to their lives. Whether that means housing, rehabilitation, education or simply advice, Brett is eager to be the glue that puts veterans together with the kind of care that they need and deserve. Brett works tirelessly around the clock, driving around to meet with veterans on the streets, coordinating temporary housing for them and setting them up with tools and resources for success.
Brett has selflessly devoted the past 3 and a half years to working with other veterans. As a veteran himself, he feels that he owes it to his brothers and sisters to help those in need, no matter what it takes. Brett has helped veterans in unimaginable ways such as finding temporary housing, finding therapy that is specific to the veteran’s needs, and supplying socks and backpacks when the winter approached. Anything from daily essentials to long term resources, these are things that Brett is constantly giving to others. Brett takes the time speak with veterans and understand their issues, as no two veterans walk the same life. He takes this information and puts it to action by providing veterans all over the country with resolutions and tools to get their lives back.
What I admire most about my nominee is that he has a huge heart and is very accepting. Brett never turns his back on a homeless veteran and always encourages others to embrace them as well. Brett always makes sure to take the time and invest in conversation with veterans in need, offer assistance and never judge them. Many people are quick to judge veterans who are down and out but Brett approaches each veteran he meets with an open heart and a genuine passion to help them succeed.
A donation of this amount would be a very significant boost to what Backpacks For Life is currently working on. As part of their developing charity, Backpacks For Life is working to build a search engine for veterans so that they can find help in one centralized location for all their needs. . Additionally, Backpacks For Life has started a project where they are working to create supportive housing for veterans where groups of veterans come to live together in a friendly environment and rebuild themselves. These two projects can do great things for our veterans and a donation of this kind would really open the doors for Backpacks For Life to successfully launch these programs.
