Walt created the Veterans Airlift Command in 2006, with an idea that he would like to help reunite combat wounded veterans and their families using volunteer pilots and private aircraft. Walt is a former Army aviator (helicopter), and his own experience of being wounded in Vietnam and spending 6 months in the hospital without family is the basis for which the VAC was formed. With his leadership (he started VAC with his personal funds), he has created an amazing organization that has now flown over 14,000 veterans and families.
One of Walt's life goals was to make a significant difference in the lives of 5 people.
Walt has made a difference in so many more than 5 lives. He has taken the time to get to know and encourage many of the veterans and families that the VAC has flown (14,000 and counting). Beyond creating a much needed service, he has continued to make a difference in the lives of many veterans.
I admire his perseverance, and his continued love of his mission.
$50,000 would be used to help coordinate private flights for combat wounded veterans.
Full disclosure: My nominee is also my dad. I've had the opportunity to work closely with him for the last ten years. It was difficult to choose which characteristic he embodied most, because he embodies character, heroism, devotion, courage, devotion, and survival.
